Six months after taking Apple’s diversity and inclusion chief post at Apple, Denise Young Smith is resigning. She plans to part with the company at the end of 2017 and will be replaced by Christie Smith, a veteran of the accounting firm Deloitte LLP.

Apple Diversity Boss Leaves Post

Smith’s departure comes as a surprise. She was put into the diversity role in May, but she’d been with the company 20 years prior, having overseen the Apple’s human resources division.

Apple confirmed Smith’s leave-taking and the new hire in a statement to TechCrunch, highlighting its belief that diversity drives innovation.

A Group Of White Men Can Be Diverse

Smith’s resignation comes a month after the diversity boss shared some comments that were criticized and deemed as controversial. While discussing diversity in a panel about racial injustice, she argued that even if there were “12 white, blue-eyed, blonde men in a room,” they’re going to be “diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation.”

Her statement quickly went viral and got chastised for seemingly defending Apple’s mostly white and male leadership climate, at a time, no less, when diversity at its executive level is severely imbalanced. Smith later apologized for her remarks in an email she sent to Apple staff.

Apple released its first diversity report under Smith’s leadership last week, showing that 46 percent of Apple’s total U.S. workforce is made up of non-white employees. But even still, diversity at the executive level is still lacking, with 81 percent of its senior officials being males and 82 percent of them being white.

While Apple’s diversity is improving, it’s still miles away from where Apple wants to be and seems to be progressing quite slowly. Part of this is because of high retention rates at the company, which means more people stay rather leave. But the numbers are bound to change if Apple keeps its diversity efforts up, but don’t expect them to happen overnight.

With those in mind, it’s quite hard to pinpoint exactly how much of an impact Smith has had during her brief stint as Apple’s diversity and inclusion chief. Considering that this was a very sudden departure, it’s possible that Apple wasn’t happy with how diversity was progressing and chose to go with Christie Smith instead. But considering Apple’s diversity chief had spent 20 years at the company already, it’s possible she was simply seeking change.

What do you make of Smith’s sudden departure? Feel free to sound off in the comments section below!

NFL Week 11 Weather Updates: Wind, rain affecting fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em decisions | Fantasy

The Week 11 NFL weather conditions forecasts may possibly problem some, notably these with players in the Jaguars-Browns, Ravens-Packers, Lions-Bears, and Chiefs-Giants games. Wind, rain, and cold temperatures could trigger you to dilemma some of your fantasy football commence ’em, sit ’em selections.

As we generally caution, undesirable weather doesn’t necessarily mean you should bench all gamers, particularly star gamers like Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, but kickers and borderline starters in a team’s passing video game instantly grow to be significantly less eye-catching.

7 days 11 RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Managing back | Broad receiver | Tight conclude | D/ST | Kicker

NFL Week 11 weather updates

The  Jags-Browns  activity will very likely see constant winds (20-additionally MPH) to go along with temperatures hovering all-around the freezing mark most of the afternoon. Because neither QB nor any of Cleveland’s receivers had been getting began in most fantasy leagues anyway, this actually only impacts Marqise Lee and possibly Marcedes Lewis. At this level, it will not appear that either need to be benched presented the matchup.

Factors will also be a minor windy (15-furthermore MPH) and cold in Green Bay for the  Ravens-Packers , but situations will not seem bad more than enough to sit Jeremy Maclin or any of the Packers receivers. Of training course, Environmentally friendly Bay’s receivers have other troubles beside the weather conditions, so if you had been previously on the fence with them, the weather conditions may possibly force them to your bench. Justin Tucker should also continue being in your lineup.

Circumstances determine to be the same for the  Lions-Bears  video game in Chicago, which hurts the benefit of Dontrelle Inman and probably Marvin Jones. Golden Tate, who does most of his destruction off of short passes close to the line of scrimmage, is nevertheless quite substantially in engage in. Matt Prater should really also be equipped to function wonderful unless conditions get worse.

The  Chiefs-Giants  match will be a little gustier, but the matchup is too excellent to sit Tyreek Hill. Eli Manning and New York ‘s vast receivers also continue to be in participate in if you were being counting on them.

Ay caramba! Is ‘The Simpsons’ really racist? Consider ‘The Problem With Apu’

When I very first listened to the premise of the documentary “The Difficulty With Apu,” I snorted derisively. What? “The Simpsons” is racist? Kwik-E-Mart operator Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is a stereotype that strays into minstrel-show territory? I was not purchasing it.

Then I viewed comedian Hari Kondabolu’s documentary, which airs Sunday night time on truTV … and I was convinced. “The Simpsons” is racist. Apu — a South Asian voiced/mocked by a white man — is offensive.

Kondabolu, the son of immigrants from India, will make all those points quite evidently in “The Trouble With Apu,” which is thought-provoking and entertaining.

For virtually 28 several years, each and every American child of South Asian descent has been called “Apu.” Has frequently read the phrase “Thank you, arrive all over again,” done in a poor Indian accent. Has been “haunted” by Apu, Kondabolu states in the documentary. “Why? It is amusing for the reason that it’s racist.”

And Apu is voiced by Hank Azaria, “a white male accomplishing an impact of a white male making fun of my father,” Kondabolu adds.

At occasions, he allows his genuine annoyance present. But, for the most portion, it is completed with a perception of humor.

Search man, I don’t detest ‘The Simpsons,’” Kondabolu says. But not every person agrees.

I hate Apu,” states actor Kal Penn, stating Apu is a “brownface” insult.

Component of “The Trouble With Apu” is that there ended up so several South Asians in the media when the demonstrate premiered, so Apu took on outsized relevance. And, as a consequence, the excuse that “The Simpsons” can make fun of absolutely everyone does not hold up.

Whilst Police Chief Wiggum is a blundering fool, there are hundreds of other, diversified representations of police in the media. Apu was pretty much it for South Asians.

ON Tv set

• “The Trouble With Apu” premieres Sunday on truTV — 8 p.m. on DirecTV and Dish 11 p.m. on Comcast.

This one particular character developed so lots of difficulties — psychologically, emotionally — for so numerous individuals,” claims Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Pitch Perfect”). “They didn’t suggest for it to come about, we just were being underrepresented.”

Kondabolu interviews Aziz Ansari, Sakina Jaffrey, Aasif Mandvi, Ajay Naidu, Maulik Pancholy, comedian Russell Peters and former U.S. Surgeon Basic Vivek Murthy, and they’ve all experienced poor experiences involving Apu.

Azaria does not will come out of this looking good. He refused to do an interview for the documentary. And there’s a clip of him declaring that the show’s producers requested him, “Can you do an Indian voice and how offensive can you make it?”

But the initially time Apu appeared in a script he was shown as just “Clerk,” and the author insists he specified the character was not South Asian. Azaria did the amusing voice the (non-Asian) writers and producers laughed and Apu was born.

Kondabolu interviews Dana Gould, a “Simpsons” writer/co-government producer from 2001-08, who argues the writers just go for laughs. He claims that humor “comes out of conflict” and “aspects of our personalities that we’re probably not so happy of.”

But you can see in his eyes he knows he’s made a slip-up when Kondabolu asks what Apu’s flaw is.

I would not say he was flawed,” Gould backtracks, “but he was a initial-generation immigrant.”

”Mocking initial-generation immigrants is humorous/racist” is the clear implication.

One particular factor men and women never comprehend is that one thing can be seriously humorous, and even now completely wrong,” Kondabolu claims. “Or morally questionable.”

At this point, what can you do? Apu has appeared in additional than 60 episodes, and Fox is not going to pull all those out of circulation.

Need to Apu be retired? Need to he be modified? Would he be much less funny if he is?

Kondabolu raises some troubling thoughts. I’ll in no way be in a position to enjoy “The Simpsons” without contemplating about this all over again.

Lena Dunham sorry for timing of statement backing ‘Girls’ writer accused of sexual assault

Lena Dunham is apologizing large time. But will it be ample?

The creator and star of HBO’s Women regrets owning weighed in on a scenario involving her close friend and series writer Murray Miller, who is accused of sexual assault.

Just after actress Aurora Perrineau on Friday went to law enforcement to accuse Miller of committing sexual assault in 2012, Dunham and government producer Jenni Konner issued a statement Friday in support of Miller.

Their primary assertion referred to the recent wave of reviews of sexual assault and misconduct in Hollywood and praises ladies for speaking out about their activities. Then Dunham and Konner cast question on accusations built by Perrineau, the daughter of actor Harold Perrineau (Dropped, Claws), in opposition to their colleague.

It study:  “But during every single time of transform there are also incidences of the society, in its enthusiasm and zeal, using down the completely wrong targets. We consider, obtaining worked carefully with him for far more than half a decade, that this is the situation with Murray Miller. Though our to start with intuition is to hear to just about every woman’s story, our insider expertise of Murray’s scenario can make us self-assured that regrettably this accusation is just one of the 3% of assault circumstances that are misreported every single yr.”

The assertion concluded: “We stand by Murray and this is all we’ll be indicating about this concern.”

But by Saturday night, Dunham was expressing regret: About the timing of the assertion of assistance.

The star, an activist who is normally outspoken on social media about women’s concerns, posted a message of apology on Twitter

“I naively thought it was vital to share my point of view on my friend’s situation as it has transpired behind the scenes around the previous couple months. I now have an understanding of that it was completely the completely wrong time to occur ahead with this sort of a assertion and I am so sorry,”

Dunham continued: “We have been offered the reward of powerful voices and by talking out we had been putting our thumb on the scale and it was mistaken. We regret this decision with each individual fiber to our being.”

The information concluded: ““Every woman who comes forward deserves to be read, fully and wholly, and our romance to the accused should not be section of the calculation anybody makes when inspecting her scenario. … We apologize to any female who have been unhappy.”

Reaction was swift. Actress Haley Ramm (Chasing Lifestyle, Mistresses, Notorious) wrote, “A best instance of saying sorry just to say sorry. Far too late..colors have been proven, babe.”

What We Lose creator Zinzi Clemmons introduced on social media early Sunday that she would quit composing for Dunham’s weekly on the web newsletter, Lenny Letter. And mentioned, “It is time for gals of color — black girls in individual — to divest from Lena Dunham.”

In a prolonged Facebook article, Clemmons wrote, “As a outcome of Lena Dunham’s statements, I have made the decision that I will no longer produce for Lenny Letter. For all you writers who are outraged about what she did, I encourage you to do the very same. Primarily women of all ages of shade. She can not have our text if she can’t respect us. To eliminate any question, I know specifically who Lena Dunham is — who she was before she was well known —and have for decades.”

Clemmons is Dunham’s modern and wrote that she understood Dunham’s circle in higher education. The author claims that they had mutual close friends and goes on to describe her encounters with some of them.

About quitting Lenny, Clemmons wrote, “I had one particular reservation in this decision, and that is that there are quite a few incredible women who operate for Lenny, two of whom have supported my function with these kinds of selfless treatment. I would apologize to them for this decision, but I’m not accomplishing that anymore. Their boss betrayed them by her actions, and it was wrong for her to make them select among their authors and supporting their boss. They deserve so significantly far better.”

She concluded: “Let’s keep Lena accountable, and to me that usually means sacrificing some comfort and a tiny little bit of funds, in this minute.”

If you have at any time knowledgeable or witnessed sexual misconduct even though performing in the enjoyment field, we’d like to listen to from you. Ship us a secure tip employing the directions at newstips.usatoday.com.
